(part of the Alnwick Music Society 2019-2020 Season)

Franz Schubert                Impromptu in F minor, D935/1

Gabriel Fauré                    Thème et Variations, op 74

Robert Schumann           Faschingsschwank aus Wien, op 26

Francis Poulenc               Trois Novelettes

Franz Schubert                Piano Sonata in A, D959

Alnwick Music Society was delighted to be back in the Playhouse when it re-opened in January. We had two successful concerts in January and February. Then the coronavirus pandemic arrived and the final three concerts of our season could not take place on the original dates.

We are hoping that we can complete our 2019-20 season with three concerts in the late summer, of which this is the third.

This is the concert that Alasdair Beatson would have given on 29th April and the programme is unchanged. Alasdair will begin with a Schubert Impromptu and end with one of his three final Piano Sonatas. In between there are three lesser known, but fascinating works, by Fauré, Schumann and Poulenc.

Scottish pianist Alasdair Beatson works prolifically as soloist and chamber musician. He is renowned as a sincere musician and intrepid programmer. Highlights of his 2019/20 season have included performances at London’s Wigmore Hall and Kings Place, a residency at Sage Gateshead and recitals on fortepiano of Beethoven violin sonatas with Viktoria Mullova.

“… extraordinary set of performances … pristine pianism … musicianship of the highest order.”                                                                                                                           Glasgow Herald

Cast & Creatives

2019-20 Season

Alnwick Music Society is delighted to be back at the Playhouse for the remaining five concerts in our 2019-20 season.

Musical highlights include Schubert’s ‘Death and the Maiden’ Quartet, Shostakovich’s 2nd Piano Trio and Franck’s Violin Sonata, as well as works by Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Haydn, Scarlatti, Prokofiev,  Fauré and Mendelssohn, to name but a few.

There are two wonderful pianists. I have heard Dinara Klinton twice and have been impressed on both occasions. Born in the Ukraine but living in the UK, she was a pianist in this year’s Leeds Piano Competition. Alasdair Beatson has a growing reputation as a soloist and accompanist. He has been a regular performer with the Royal Northern Sinfonia this season, playing with the orchestra but also in chamber recitals.

We also have a quality young Piano Trio, the Busch Trio, who were top class when they came to Morpeth.

The excellent Sacconi Quartet, who have been together as a group since 2001, will play music by Rachmaninov, Mendelssohn and Schubert.

We are also thrilled to have a brilliant string player, Lawrence Power, who will play the violin as well as the viola in a programme of romantic music, accompanied by Simon Crawford-Phillips.
