John Casken – Six Wooded Pieces

Szymanowski – Variations on a Polish theme

Acclaimed as a pianist of “amazing power and panache” (The Telegraph), Clare Hammond is recognised for the virtuosity and authority of her performances and has developed a “reputation for brilliantly imaginative concert programmes” (BBC Music Magazine). Tonight’s programme is no exception, featuring a range of accessible, but sometimes challenging, music from a female contemporary of Mozart through to a recent work by our locally based composer, John Casken.

Clare is recording the Montgeroult etudes for BIS in August. Montgeroult was an absolutely phenomenal composer and wrote in a style that was decades ahead of her time. The Piazzolla is a special arrangement for his centenary this year. The Still is another exciting find, whose music is just beautiful, and these pieces are reminiscent of Debussy’s La Cathédrale Engloutie. The Szymanowski is in the Romantic, bravura tradition and is on Clare’s most recent disc for BIS entitled Variations.
