Music Partnership North Traditional Music Ensemble – The Northumbrian Ranters

The Northumbrian Ranters is made up of talented young traditional musicians from across Northumberland and Newcastle. Their aim is to promote and raise the profile of traditional music both in the area and further afield. The group has toured extensively abroad including the States and have just returned from Scotland where they visited both the Ayrshire Fiddle Orchestra and the Scottish School of Excellence in Plockton.

The ensemble is made up of fiddles, Northumbrian pipes, cello, harp, accordion, flute, guitar and keyboard and their music is made up of both traditional sets from Northumberland and around the world.  The Ranters have a unique sound which incorporates both a classical and traditional element to their arrangements.  This results in unique harmonies and moving slow airs, painting a musical landscape of Northumberland.

While the group are under the musical direction of Richard Johnstone the Ranters have a high level of self direction and all students are encouraged and supported in self evaluating their repertoire and performances.
