Clifford William Blakey

Tuesday 1st September - Saturday 10th October 2015

Northern artist Clifford Blakey celebrates his new permanent home in North Northumberland with an exhibition of paintings of Northumberland at Alnwick Playhouse.

“It’s taken around 3 years to find the right spot to set up a new home and studio,” says Clifford. “I lived in Whitley Bay for around 30 years and had to travel to North Northumberland to get to my favourite places to paint them. Now it’s pretty much a simple case of putting my boots on!”

Clifford’s paintings reflect his emotional responses to the ever changing light and weather of Northumberland. Rich with many layers of splashes, washes, scumbling and scraping techniques his paintings capture a moment of time cut out of the landscape. It’s an exhibition about one person’s passion for Northumberland!

Clifford Blakey graduated on 1980 with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Newcastle University and again in 1986 with a Masters in Fine Art. He exhibits in the North East of England, Yorkshire and Scotland regularily and has won several awards including the Brian Mosley Memorial Award.

Terry Quy - Lower Floor

Tuesday 11th October - Saturday 19th November 2016

A graduate of Fine Art & English at Exeter University Terry has spent many years painting, writing and teaching in Yorkshire but now lives and works in Northumberland. This selection of pictures celebrates key, recurrent themes in the artists work. Whether these be myths and legends, childhood, the countryside or the spirit of place both near and far. Terrys preoccupation with pattern, shape and colour results in a stylised and decorative approach which sees realism taking second place to atmosphere and design.

Terry is also a family historian and her novel 'Turning Back' is published on Amazon and available to buy from the Playhouse during the exhibition.
