Become a Volunteer

Alnwick Playhouse is looking for Volunteer Stewards.

  • Do you like film, theatre and the arts?
  • Are you passionate about the Playhouse and supporting the work we do?
  • Would you like to make a difference to the community in which you live or simply want to meet like-minded people?  Then why not become a volunteer at Alnwick Playhouse?
Volunteering has been at the heart of Alnwick Playhouse from the time it opened and over the years the support for the Playhouse has gone from strength to strength. Today we are lucky to have a team of over 50 people from all walks of life, of all ages and from across the County who very kindly give up their own time to carry out a variety of roles. We couldn’t do it without them.  But there’s always room for more!
Why volunteer?  There are many reasons why people volunteer. Here are just a few.....
  • Meet new people, make new friends and spend time in a creative environment with a wide range of people, aged 16 to 80+, from all backgrounds and locations across Northumberland.
  • Get involved in the running of one of the leading small venues in the North of England, with an audience of 43,000 people in 2015/16 you will always be busy and things will never be dull!  A wonderful and vibrant arts centre and a remarkably strong and valuable part of the community.
  • Be among the first to find out what’s coming up at the Playhouse with regular newsletters.
  • For our younger volunteers you will be able to enjoy an extensive programme of work, particularly useful for those studying Literature or Drama at any level or for those looking to forge a career in the arts.
  • Experience a wide range of duties working alongside our team of full-time theatre staff.
  • Enjoy free tickets for special social events with complimentary drinks.
  • A current volunteer said “There are many volunteering opportunities but I chose the Playhouse, partly because I enjoy seeing a show and meeting people, but also because it is a valuable community resource which needs supporting”.
The Role: What will I be doing?
  • Led by experienced Front of House staff you will work in pairs and teams to provide excellent customer service and enable visitors to have an all-round enjoyable experience.
  • Welcome visitors to the theatre, check tickets and show them their seats.
  • Perhaps serve pre-show and interval confectionary.
  • Help manage the auditorium during the show.

We are grateful for any amount of time that you are able to give.  With such a packed programme we rely heavily on volunteers to staff each performance - we simply couldn’t do it without them.  A regular commitment means that you will stay up to date with any new theatre policies and procedures and additional opportunities - all adding up to a more enjoyable and rewarding experience for everyone involved.

Youth Theatre Volunteer
We are looking for volunteers who would like to help us with our registration and help with the break time drinks and snacks during our rehearsals.

You must be friendly and welcoming and able to speak to the children and parents, we would ideally like a couple of people to share the role, and maybe be able to lend a hand with any crafts and costume for the production, but if you just want to help with the signing in and out that would be great too!  If you are interested in the role you can contact Sarah our Director of Youth Theatre directly at

The Playhouse is looking to create a list of chaperones to volunteer on projects and plays for young people.
The role will involve looking after the children back stage – helping them with costume changes, supervising the greenroom and dressing rooms to make sure everyone is ok and that noise is kept to a minimum!
This role does require a DBS check and a License from Northumberland County Council so if you are interested in the role you can contact Sarah our Director of Youth Theatre directly at
