Special Projects for Children and Young People

Alnwick Playhouse Storytelling Chair

The 'Once Upon a Woodland' project saw us launch our very own Storytelling Chair which is now permanently housed at the Playhouse. The project was designed specifically for children under 10 in our mini youth theatre group and made a step change away from weekly drama classes offering an in-depth participatory experience with the focus on artistic process and new art form sessions.
As well as coming up with ideas for the visual creation of the chair working with artist Alison Ashton, the children also worked on artistic portfolios, made masks and created their own stories. At the launch event they proudly unveiled the chair and sang songs for their parents and members of the community to celebrate its arrival.
Seven of the group have achieved their Explore Arts Award as a result of the process. We have shared our working practice across Northumberland and through Culture Bridge North East Network through a case study document.

Silver Arts Award at the Playhouse

We are proud to have designed a process which offers young artistic leaders in our community the opportunity to programme and take part in a 'Theatre Takeover' and achieve their Silver Arts Award. In June 2015, four of hte members of our youth leadership group achieved Silver Arts Award as a result of working on our takeover programme. The event programme offered local young musicians and performers the opportunity to perform live on the stage and in our bar areas.
The young people appreciated the opportunity to work alongside our professional staff team to plan their event in roles from Programme Manager, Evaluator, Designer to Marketing Manager and we were pleased to see a lot of new faces in the theatre and the br space decorated to feel more young person friendly. The event was a sell out and we hope to hold more in the future.

School Partnerships

In March 2015 we worked with 10 students from the Duchess's Community High School. The focus of the project was to work with professional artists to revamp and up-cycle our Green Room space backstage. The year 10 group of visual arts students were supported through a live brief to completely re-design our green room space whilest completing their bronze and silver arts award. You can watch a short time-lapse film of the process of this event here: www.alanfentiman.co.uk/artsaward

BBC Performing Arts Fund

We were successful in applying to the BBC Performing Arts Fund in 2014, which saw us offer workshops and experiences in flash-mob performance, circus skills and mime to young people from the community. We worked with our youth theatre to create 'The Greatest Show on Earth' and hone the new learnt skills which was a very positive experience for our youth theatre.

"Combining circus skills, traditional musical theatre, dance and a detective mystery, it is certainly a demanding and complex piece. But pull it off they did and these youngsters produced a slick, polished and highly entertaining show." Northumberland Gazette 5th Dec 2014

Wonders of the North

In 2013, seven young people worked with professional film maker Alan Fentimen to script and create a film based on ghostly goings on in Alnwick.

Alnwick Through the Looking Glass was screened to an audience at The Playhouse.
