Sashiko originated in northern Japan, as simple hand stitching to mend and decorate clothing, although its exact origins are unclear.

In this workshop we will practise the Sashiko running stitch in traditional white thread (and other colours, if preferred) on navy fabric.

We will study some of the typical designs and learn how to transfer designs and draw our own using a grid.

By the end of the session, students will have had the opportunity of creating a greeting card displaying a Sashiko design, stitching a sample of boro (visible mending), and preparing a Sashiko brooch.
